One of the seven Midlife Wonders is to be doing things with my WonderMama #WonderWithMama . Though since these life goals were formed back in June last year, I have not been able to see my mother at all. What!
Instead of letting myself sulk, I have been searching for ways to still do things together with the help of technology. At first, I thought about taking some nutrition course together, but not many are available for online classes, especially when we are dialling in from different places.
Then one day, at work, I met a new colleague who is from Shanghai: my late beloved grandmother's hometown. I threw out a 「阿拉外婆是上海人」(ak lak nga bu si sang h哎 nin), and we got on well from then on. I was so excited about it, I told mum about it the following day. She said she would also like to rekindle with this connection, the connection with 婆婆。 So I said I will try to find us a tutor and let's learn some Shanghainese together.

Two days later, I booked for our first lesson.
Tonight, we had our first session with Laoshi. It was so hard but so much fun to be doing it with mum. We will have homework to do everyday, and help each other practice (or more mum helping me to practice given her much stronger foundation on the dialect).
We enjoyed it a lot, and will continue with weekly lessons with Laoshi going forward. We will soon be able to gossip like a true Shanghainese in their tone and voice.
